64/67:332 Formal Functions in Tonal Music [Godin]

Prerequisite: 64/67:280 or permission of Instructor.

Building on the concepts studied in Theory III, this course explores the theory of formal functions and large scale musical form. From phrase functions to full-movement forms, the course examines how melody, harmony, rhythm, motives, and tonal organization interact to create a sense of musical organization that we call form. These concepts are applied to the in-depth analysis of instrumental repertoire from the Classical period.
