Perspectives on Contemporary Performance is a seminar course which will analyze and evaluate art music concert practices within the context of contemporary performance and culture, through a range of arts criticism, journalism and scholarly publications. It will compare classical and jazz performance traditions with those of performance art and mixed media visual art, modern theatre and dance, sound art and installation, pop/rock/indie music conventions. The course will explore and deconstruct both traditional and non-traditional approaches to repertoire, genre distinctions, collaboration, venues, audience development, community engagement, programming styles and a wide range of dissemination topics including recording, touring and online forums.
