This is designed to introduce the aspiring musician to foundational concepts in ethnomusicology, in particular the perspectives by which ethnomusicologists understand the pace of music and musicians in culture. Students will be introduced to the principals of fieldwork, and to the range of contextual and ethical issues that contribute to holistic -and critical- understandings of music-making. We will pay particular attention to historical, cultural and political issues relevant to contemporary musical researchers and performers working in Canada.
