A study of soil biota and biological processes within soil. The course will consider interactions of plants with soil, considering roots, plant uptake of nutrients, and the impact on plants of varying levels of soil water, soil salinity, and soil pH. Root-microbe symbioses and soil microbial transformations of nitrogen will be explained. Students will learn about a range of soil fauna, and details will be given for organic matter, litter decomposition, and soil respiration.
3 lecture hours per week, 3 laboratory hours per week, one term.
