A chronological survey of jazz from its origins to the present. The course will trace the development of important styles and feature the works of influential performers through the use of historic recordings. Topics for study will include the beginnings and evolution of the blues, ragtime, the Chicago school, the swing era, avante garde and free jazz, contemporary trends, and Canadian contributions.
