38:267 Sustainable Prairie Ecosystems [Irvine]

Prerequisite: 38:170 or 38:192 or 42:160 or permission of Instructor.

The concepts of sustainability and sustainable development have been studied and written about at length over the last two decades. This course will provide an introduction to sustainability issues with specific reference to the Canadian Prairies. Students develop an understanding of native ecosystems and examples of how management is needed to maintain these ecosystems. Since there will continue to be a major impact of human kind on native and cropped prairie ecosystems we will evaluate the impact of various agriculture operations on sustainability.

3 lecture hours per week, one term.
