Starting from the 19th century through to present day, this course focuses on various art practices and individual artists of Metis ancestry as they relate to the historical and contemporary cultural and political realities of Metis peoples. Metis art will be discussed critically and contextualized in ways that allow for dialogue about the historical and contemporary cultural struggles and achievements of Metis peoples. The discussions about Metis art history will be grounded in bi-weekly introductory Michif language instruction, community engagement, and art-making (no experience with art necessary).
