36:162 Introduction to Women's Studies: Contemporary Issues in Gender [Blady]

Prerequisites: 30:161 or permission of Instructor.

This course explores questions and ideas about gender, beginning with an examination of the differences between sex and gender. The course will explore issues such as gender-based discrimination, the performance of gender, and the understanding of gender beyond the binary categories of "male" and "female". Queer theory and transgender issues will also be considered, especially as they intersect and disrupt the social construction of gender in Western societies. The construction and performance of gender in cross-cultural and transnational perspectives will also be addressed to demonstrate the diversity that exists in relation to gender categories and their understanding.
