A study of the history, literature and religion of the Jewish people from earliest times to the beginning of the Common Era, with special focus on the ancient Near Eastern context in which Judaism evolved. Critical examination of ancient Jewish literature, such as the Jewish Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls, will permit examination of diverse Jewish beliefs, customs, ritual and law.
